Shut Up! Shut Up! Shut Up!

I stick my fingers in my ears
wiggling them back and forth
producing that popping sound
I hope will drown you out

Your voice is noise pollution
tainting flowery air
with words unworthy of the waves
rattling these old drums

Even when I get away
you criticize my choice
accusing me of disrespect
for running cowardly

But this thing I do
This abandonment
Is not to scorn or spite
It simply must be done

because you won’t shut up
